This Latin American classic dessert combines a fluffy sponge cake soaked in three types of milk and topped with whipped cream. - 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- 5 large eggs (separated)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ⅓ cup whole milk
For the Milk Mixture:
- 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- ¾ cup heavy cream
For the Topping:
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Fresh fruit (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a bowl, mix flour and baking powder. Set aside.
- Beat egg yolks with ¾ cup sugar until pale and thick. Stir in milk and vanilla.
- Gently mix in dry ingredients.
- In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Add remaining sugar and beat until stiff peaks.
- Fold egg whites into the batter gently until combined.
- Pour into prepared pan and bake 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool cake, then poke holes all over with a fork.
- Whisk evaporated milk, condensed milk, and cream. Pour evenly over the cake.
- Cover and chill for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Whip cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Spread over cake.
- Garnish with fruit, slice, and serve chilled.
Notes
- For best results, chill overnight.
- Add a sprinkle of cinnamon or toasted coconut for flavor variation.
- Use a serrated knife for clean slicing.
- Store refrigerated for up to 5 days.
