Description

Bright and fun cookies that look like cotton candy, perfect for kids’ parties and gifts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk (or 1/4 cup milk + 1 tsp lemon juice or vinegar)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Gel food coloring (pink and blue)
  • Cotton candy flavoring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients. In a bowl, stir the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream butter and sugar. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until the mix looks light and smooth.
  4. Add the wet ingredients. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Add the buttermilk and a small drop of cotton candy flavor, if you use it.
  5. Combine dry and wet ingredients. Add the dry mix to the wet mix in two parts. Stir until the dough looks even.
  6. Divide and color the dough. Split the dough into two equal parts. Add pink gel to one part and blue gel to the other. Mix until the color is even.
  7. Form the cotton candy cookies. Roll small balls from each color. Press one pink ball and one blue ball together and then gently flatten to make a swirl look.
  8. Bake. Place the cookies on the sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges look set but the center is soft.
  9. Cool and serve. Let the cookies cool on the sheet for a few minutes. Move them to a rack to finish cooling.

Notes

Store cookies in an airtight box at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer life, put them in the fridge for up to 1 week or freeze them for up to 3 months.
