Description

This Hot Orange Chicken is a sweet, tangy, and crisp dish that captures the delicious flavors of your favorite takeout.


Ingredients

  • 2 lbs chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • ยฝ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • ยฝ cup brown sugar
  • Dried chili peppers
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Salt and white pepper (to taste)
  • Oil for frying
  • Orange zest
  • Vinegar
  • Sesame oil
  • Garlic (for sauce)

Instructions

  1. Combine cornstarch, flour, salt, and white pepper in one bowl. Whisk eggs and a little oil in another bowl.
  2. Coat chicken pieces first in the egg wash, then in the cornstarch mixture.
  3. Heat oil in a deep pan; fry chicken until golden brown, about 5โ€“7 minutes per batch. Drain on a rack or paper.
  4. In a saucepan, mix orange juice, zest, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, sesame oil, and cornstarch. Stir over low heat until the sauce thickens.
  5. Stir-fry dried chili peppers and garlic in a skillet for a few seconds. Add the orange sauce and fried chicken. Toss to coat all pieces well.
  6. Add red pepper flakes if desired. Serve hot with sliced green onions on top.

Notes

For best results, dry the chicken pieces well before coating and fry in small batches to maintain oil temperature.
