Description
Delicious, soft sugar cookies that hold their shape and are perfect for decorating with icing.

- 2 ยพ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ยฝ teaspoon salt
- ยพ cup salted butter, softened at room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ยฝ teaspoon almond extract (or ยผ teaspoon for less almond taste)
- For glaze: 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 3โ4 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
- ยฝ teaspoon vanilla extract
- Gel food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
- In a second large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition.
- Add vanilla and almond extract, mixing until even.
- Slowly add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing on low until a soft dough forms.
- Divide the dough into two equal parts and roll each piece to about 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface.
- Dust with flour, cover with plastic wrap, and chill in the fridge for 1โ2 hours or overnight.
- Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC) and line baking sheets with parchment.
- Cut shapes from the chilled dough and space them 2โ3 inches apart on sheets.
- Chill cut shapes on sheets for at least 10 minutes before baking.
- Bake for 8โ10 minutes or until edges are just light brown.
- Cool on sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- For glaze: Mix sifted powdered sugar with milk, light corn syrup, and vanilla until smooth. Decorate cookies as desired.
Notes
Chill the dough well to keep edges sharp. The cookies can be stored for several days at room temperature in an airtight box.
