  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2/3 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature) for frosting
  • 1/3 cup sour cream for frosting
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for frosting
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt for frosting
  • 3 cups powdered sugar for frosting
  • Food coloring, sprinkles
  • 1 cup powdered sugar for icing
  • 1 to 3 tablespoons milk for icing
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract for icing
  • Food coloring for icing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Line baking sheets with parchment or spray with nonstick spray.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light.
  4. Beat in vanilla and eggs, one at a time.
  5. Stir in sour cream.
  6. Add dry mix to wet mix a little at a time. Stir until it forms a soft dough.
  7. Wrap dough and chill for 1 hour or until firm.
  8. Roll dough 1/4 inch thick on a floured board. Cut shapes with cookie cutters.
  9. Place cut cookies on the sheet. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes or until the edge is light gold.
  10. Let cookies cool on the sheet for 2 minutes before moving to a rack to cool fully.
  11. For frosting, beat butter until smooth, then add sour cream, vanilla, and salt. Beat until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar until thick and creamy.
  12. For icing, mix powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth. Tint with food color if desired.
  13. Pipe or spread icing on cookies and add sprinkles while icing is wet.

Notes

Chill dough to maintain shape and avoid over-baking for best results.
