- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
For the frosting:
- 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temp
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.
- Carefully stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat the butter in a large bowl until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with the heavy cream. Mix in vanilla extract.
- Once the cakes are cool, layer them with frosting between each layer and cover the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
- Slice, serve, and enjoy your rich triple-layer chocolate cake!
Notes
Use room temperature eggs and butter for an even mix. Mix the batter until smooth but do not over mix. Let the cakes cool well before frosting to avoid soft frosting.
