Description

An easy chocolate cake recipe that’s moist and delicious, perfect for any occasion.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 large eggs (at room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (at room temperature)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (or Dutch process cocoa)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9×13-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray and set it aside.
  2. Combine the butter, water, cocoa powder, and salt in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until melted, then remove from heat.
  3. Whisk together flour, sugar, and baking soda in a large bowl. Add half of the melted butter mixture, blending until thick. Add the remaining mixture and stir until combined.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking until blended after each addition. Mix in sour cream and vanilla until smooth.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  6. Sift together confectioner’s sugar and cocoa for the frosting. In a stand mixer, beat butter until smooth. Add sugar, cocoa, sour cream, vanilla, and salt, then beat until smooth.
  7. Frost the cooled cake with the frosting, cut into squares, and serve.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients and do not overmix the batter.
